JACKSON, Tenn. - Martin Methodist baseball fell short to host-school Union University on Tuesday night, unable to overcome UU's offensive outburst. Rob Holley went 3-for-4 in the loss, as Shane Murli suffered the loss on the mound.
Union struck first against MMC, plating one in the first and then three in the fourth against starter Murli, but the RedHawks began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the frame when a dropped fly ball, scored Jett who was on with a walk.
As Union added a run in the sixth, the RedHawks would come within one in the seventh with a three-spot. Jett and Franklin led off with back-to-back singles, later scoring on a Clint Gobbell sacrifice fly, and pinch-runner Jerry Jeter scoring on a Holley single. Justin McQueen, reaching on a bunt single, would later score on a Nick Flanagan sacrifice fly for a 5-4 score.
The Bulldogs, however, refused to back down, plating two in the top of the eighth, and four more in the ninth for an 11-4 score. MMC tacked on a single run in the ninth, but would not find enough to overcome the 11-5 final score.
The RedHawks will take on fifth-seeded Cumberland on Wednesday, May 2nd at 3:30 pm in an elimination game.
