PULASKI, Tenn. – After a dominating 4-for-8 performance in Wednesday's sweep of Brescia (Ky.) University, RedHawk second baseman Matt Thomas finds himself with the top batting average in the NAIA.
Thomas, who notched three triples Wednesday's wins, enters the weekend batting at a .464 clip with a .685 slugging percentage. His six triples on the season rank fourth in the nation. Earlier this year, Thomas notched a 15-game hit streak, which is believed to be the longest hit-streak in the four-year era of RedHawk athletics.
Despite the gaudy stat lines, RedHawks head coach Kelly Bratton emphasized that the second baseman will need to continue to be an offensive force if the RedHawks are to close out their regular season on a high note.
"Matt has been playing at an extremely high level – particularly of late," Bratton said. "He has been swinging a hot bat for most of the season while playing pretty solid defense for us at second base. But once that calendar flips over into late April and conference races start heating up, it becomes a different ballgame. We are going to need big efforts from everyone – not just No. 2."
The RedHawks return to action Friday afternoon when they travel to Blue Mountain (Miss.) University. The RedHawks close out their 2013 regular season with a trio of games against conference-leading Freed-Hardeman on April 25-26.
