PULASKI, Tenn. – Playing their first home game in postseason tournament history, Martin Methodist withstood a scare from scrappy Edward Waters (Fla.) College to claim a 3-2 victory on Day One of the TranSouth/Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Unaffiliated Group Tournament at the East Campus Ballpark Tuesday afternoon.
Turning to left-handed ace Josh Brown, the RedHawks (34-16) received one of the strongest performances of the season from the senior, who scattered eight hits across nine innings of work in the complete game victory.
After giving up an early first-inning run, Brown settled down and tossed eight consecutive scoreless frames before allowing another stray run in the top of the ninth to claim his sixth victory of the season (6-4).
Meanwhile, at the plate, the RedHawks pieced together seven hits to scratch out three runs of their runs – scoring a single tally in the fourth to tie the ballgame before adding insurance runs in the seventh and eighth.
Rob Holley had the a perfect day in the box for the RedHawks, stroking two doubles while drawing a walk and notching a sacrifice fly to finish the day 2-for-2. Holley's pair of doubles did not drive in a run, but his sac fly in the seventh gave the RedHawks a 2-1 lead that looked like it might prove to be the game-winner.
The RedHawks added another important insurance run, in the eighth when Charles Hill notched a one-out double and came in to score one batter later on Evan Fergerson's RBI seeing-eye single back up the middle.
With the win, the RedHawks picked up a victory in their fourth straight conference tournament opener, dating back to the 2009 season.
The RedHawks will meet Talladega (Ala.) College, who rallied from seven runs down late in the ballgame to upset Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University Tuesday night. The RedHawks and Tornadoes will meet Wednesday night at the East Campus Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
