Baseball: Lindsey, Brewer Combine to Lift RedHawks over Barons

PULASKI, Tenn.Caleb Lindsey drove in three runs and Zack Brewer tossed six scoreless innings as the Martin Methodist Baseball team bounced back with a 5-3 victory over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College at the East Campus Saturday afternoon.

A day after smacking the first home run of his RedHawk career, Lindsey came up big for the RedHawks on Saturday as the sophomore catcher roped a two-out double down the right field line in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the RedHawks lead to 4-0.

Lindsey's courtesy runner, Davey Smitherman, would come in to score in the ensuing at-bat when Seth Staggs laced a single up the middle to push the lead to 5-0.

Brewer, meanwhile, worked his way out of a couple of sticky situations but did not surrender a run in his six innings of work for the victory (2-0) on the mound. The sophomore allowed just one extra base hit on the afternoon in the form of a double to lead off the ballgame.

Owen Blackwelder allowed six hits and three runs, but was able to nail down the game's final nine outs in the first save of his RedHawk career.

The win was a much-needed one for the RedHawks (12-10, 8-7 SSAC), who dropped the first two games of the series to the Barons on Friday afternoon.

In all, the RedHawks notched just eight hits on the day, with Erick Bonifacio and Ryan Jett combing for a pair each in the lone multi-hit performances of the afternoon.

Jimbo Ramsey drove in the game's first run without a swing of the bat as the junior drew a bases loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to open the game's scoring.

On the ensuing at-bat, Lindsey was able to smack a 2-2 fastball to deep right field and empty the bases for the game's critical insurance runs.

The loss spoiled a 12-hit afternoon for the Barons (17-5, 8-4), who left 11 runners stranded in the defeat.

With the win, the RedHawks ended the Barons seven game win streak, a mark that was the best in the conference. The win also moved the RedHawks into the upper half of the 14-team conference as teams jockey for position in the middle of the standings.

The RedHawks return to action Monday, March 17 when they host Oakwood (Ala.) University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the East Campus.
