Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After tossing a one-hit shutout and flirting with a no hitter in Martin Methodist's 4-1 victory at Brescia (Ky.) University last week, Blake Beavers has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 22, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
OFFICIAL RELEASE
Beavers, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Sheffield, Ala., turned in one of the most dominant performances of his career in the RedHawks win over the Bearcats, taking a no hitter through six full innings before allowing a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh.
The right hander notched a season-high nine strikeouts in the victory and faced the 21 minimum number of batters, allowing just the one hit. The only other Bearcat to reach base reached via error as Beavers issued no walks and did not hit a batter. The lone Bearcat run came as result of a throwing error that allowed a Bearcat to move to third and score on a ground out in the next at-bat.
The award is the first of the season for the RedHawks and the third weekly conference award for Beavers, who was twice named TranSouth Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week during his freshman campaign.
The RedHawks return to action on Friday, March 28 when they travel to McKenzie, Tenn. for a weekend series against conference rival Bethel University. First pitch in Friday's contest is set for 2 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader set to begin at Noon.
