PULASKI, Tenn. -- The Martin Methodist Men's Basketball team stunned No. 13 Dalton State in a 65-64 victory Saturday afternoon in the Curry Christian Life Center.
The RedHawks (1-11, 1-1 SSAC) evened their mark in conference play with the victory and gave the Roadrunners (7-3, 2-1 SSAC) their first conference loss this season.
The RedHawks got off to a sluggish start and even saw the visitors pull ahead by 16 points in the early moments of the second half. But that's when they mounted the comeback and took the lead for the first time with 3:14 left in the contest.
Junior guard Jemeereo Spain orchestrated the comeback as he finished with a game-high 21 points, including the go-ahead bucket with just over three minutes remaining. Spain also connected on all 11 of his free throw attempts on the afternoon and sank four crucial free throws in the final minute of the ballgame.
Ahead by three with just over 10 seconds remaining, the RedHawks forced the Roadrunners to hoist a long-range 3-pointer that sailed wide. An offensive rebound and two-point basket as time expired pulled the visitors within one.
As a team, the RedHawks finished the day 20-of-21 from the free throw line. The 20 makes marked the third time this season the RedHawks have sank 20-plus free throws, but the 95.2 shooting percentage easily marked a season best.
Fellow guard Javonte Cooper flanked Spain with 14 points and a 6-of-6 effort from the free throw line. As a team, the RedHawks outscored the Roadrunners by a 23-10 margin off the bench.
And while Spain and Cooper helped the squad with scoring, freshman guard JJ Jones tracked down a team-best eight rebounds in the victory. Jones pulled down four clutch rebounds in the game's final four minutes to keep the contest tight and the RedHawks in the lead.
Dalton State saw four starters finish in double-figures, led by Sean Chisolm's 15-point night.
With the win, the RedHawks extracted a small measure of revenge as they avenged a loss from the SSAC conference tournament to the Roadrunners last March.
The RedHawks have now won two out of their last three meetings versus the Roadrunners and are 2-0 in their last two meetings inside the Curry Christian Life Center.
Martin Methodist returns to action on Monday, Dec. 18, for a showdown versus another ranked foe in No. 12 Faulkner (Ala.) University.
Tipoff in Monday's contest is set for 3:30 p.m. in the CLC.
