Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Men's Soccer team delivered one of the biggest upsets of the NAIA season Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 victory versus No. 3 Mobile (Ala.) at Grissom Pitch.
After a hard-fought defeat versus No. 1 William Carey (Miss.) on Thursday, the RedHawks (8-6, 3-2 SSAC) came out with a renewed sense of confidence on Saturday and held the Rams (11-3, 4-2 SSAC) in check for a full 90 minutes.
The RedHawks were outshot by a 15-11 margin but had more shots on target (8) than the Rams (6) in the three-goal victory.
After a scoreless 40 minutes, the RedHawks broke for the first goal when Jonas Arcalean finished a pass from Miguel Tizapa to put the home side ahead by a goal.
The RedHawks kept the momentum rolling into the second half when they added another tally from Alex Kleczkowski in the 48th minute.
From there, the Rams began to throw numbers forward and try to break for a goal of their own.
However, RedHawk goalkeeper Julien Gregoire delivered arguably his best performance of the season as he made several crucial stops to keep the Rams offense at bay.
Finally, in the 84th minute, the RedHawks subbed on Coulton Owens. Owens immediately contributed as he knocked a goal home just seconds after coming on to the pitch.
The goal put the RedHawks ahead 3-0 and capped the scoring in one of the biggest regular-season wins in program history.
The win matched the biggest regular-season home victory in program history, dating back to a 3-1 victory versus No. 3 Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) on Oct. 25, 2014.
The win also capped Alumni Weekend 2018, an event that saw several former RedHawk Men's Soccer players return to campus and participate in the team's annual alumni intrasquad match.
"The boys played their hearts out on Thursday versus William Carey and we came up just short," RedHawks head coach Chris Leonardi said. "To see them keep that focus and commitment versus another Top 5 opponent was special. Mobile is an outstanding team and I was proud of the way we converted our chances and made stops when we needed them most. We will celebrate this win for a day or two and then start preparing for the final stretch run of our conference schedule."
The win lifted the RedHawks to their third conference win of the season and lifted the RedHawks into the top half of the SSAC standings with just three regular-season matches left.
The third and fourth-place finishers in the SSAC standings will earn a home matchup in the opening round of the SSAC Men's Soccer Championship, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 3.
The RedHawks return to action this Saturday, Oct. 20, when they head to Tampa, Florida for a conference matchup versus Florida College.
Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. CT.
