RedHawks Take Two on SSAC Opening Weekend

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Baseball team took the first two games and dropped the third in its opening conference weekend series this past weekend at Bobby Walker Field.

The RedHawks (7-7, 2-1 SSAC) opened the series with a 3-0 victory behind a strong pitching performance from Ben Hargrove. Hargrove fanned 13 batters in the victory and allowed just two hits on the day. At the plate, the RedHawks were led by the trio of Aaron Hobbs, John David Isbell and Drew Nipper. The trio accounted for the three runs driven in by the RedHawks, highlighted by Hobbs sixth-inning blast over the left-field wall to give the RedHawks the 3-0 edge.

In Saturday's second contest, the RedHawks cranked out 12 hits and produced 10 runs in a 10-1 victory over the Wolf Pack. The RedHawks scored five runs in the game's first three innings and never looked back. Taylor Potterfield, Riley Phillips and Desmond Williams all produced extra-base hits for the RedHawks. Starter Colin Lillie scattered four hits over nine innings for the complete-game victory. Lillie allowed just one earned run and struck out nine in the win.

In Sunday's final contest, the RedHawks made a late rally but were unable to fight back in a 3-1 defeat. The Wolf Pack jumped on starter Logan Underhill early with two runs in the first inning and hung on for the two-run win down the stretch. Potterfield drove in the only run for the RedHawks with a seventh-inning RBI single. Dylan Barbee pitched three innings of spotless relief work in the defeat.

The RedHawks are now one of three teams currently tied for second place in the SSAC standings. No. 6 William Carey (Miss.) and University of Mobile (Ala.) also went 2-1 on opening weekend. No. 2 Faulkner (Ala.) was the lone team to start the season with a sweep.

The RedHawks take a conference bye this weekend, but will play No. 20 Campbellsville (Ky.) this Saturday in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Bobby Walker Field.
