Late PK Dooms RedHawks

Box Score

PULASKI, Tenn. – In a back-and-forth regular season affair, an 86th minute penalty kick doomed the Martin Methodist Men's Soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Tennessee Wesleyan Thursday night at Grissom Pitch.

The RedHawks (1-2) opened the scoring just nine minutes in, when Drew Bradford finished a cross from Jonas Arcalean.

The goal capped an impressive buildup for the RedHawks, who built from the middle with Mario Lopez, sent wide left with Arcalean before the cross into the box for Bradford's finish.

The lead would hold up for the entirety of the first half as the RedHawks kept the Bulldogs (4-0) off the scoreboard during the opening 45 minutes.

But in the second half, the Bulldogs struck for the early goal as they leveled the contest in the 49th minute.

From there, the two squads went back-and-forth, with overtime looming as the final minutes ticked off the clock.

But in the 86th minute, the RedHawks were whistled for a foul just inside the penalty area and the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick.

Harry Baggaley stepped up to the spot and converted the chance to give the Bulldogs a last-minute lead.

A final RedHawk flurry nearly tied the contest, however, as they had two scoring chances in the game's final minute.

Alex Kleczkowski had a point-blank chance saved and Juan Yepes left-footed effort rattled off the crossbar with virtually no time left on the game clock.

The loss marked the first home defeat in regulation for the RedHawks in nine matches, dating back to a 1-0, Oct. 15 defeat to William Carey (Miss.) in 2016.

The contest capped a two-match homestand for the RedHawks, who now hit the road for a contest at Marian (Ind.) on Labor Day.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana.
