PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Men's Basketball team outlasted Cumberland (Tenn.) in a 74-72 overtime thriller Monday night in the Curry Christian Life Center.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair that featured nine ties and three lead changes between the two future Mid-South Conference rivals. The RedHawks (7-4) trailed by as many as eight points late in the second half, but found a way to rally back and pick up the win.
The RedHawks appeared to have won the contest in regulation, as a Cumberland jumper rattled off the iron in the game's final seconds. But a foul was called against the RedHawks with 0.3 seconds remaining and Cumberland big man Asher Blum converted both free throws to tie the contest and force overtime.
The RedHawks hit two critical 3-pointers early in the overtime period to push their lead to as many as four – the largest of the night – with 2:31 left in the period.
The Phoenix (9-5) answered with a triple of their own with 57 seconds remaining to cut the defecit to just one, but the RedHawks added a shot from the foul line to extend their lead to 74-72 with 10 seconds remaining.
A last-gasp Cumberland triple rattled off the rim and into the hands of the RedHawks to preserve the win and secure a season sweep of the Phoenix.
Shondell Jackson and Tomonique Marion lead the way with 22 and 18, respectively for the RedHawks.
Adarian Hudson delivered his best performance as a RedHawk. The freshman posted 12 points and added seven assists in the win. As a team, the RedHawks shot exactly 50 percent from the floor with a 30-of-60 night. The RedHawks connected on 7-of-24 shots from distance in the win.
Cumberland was led by Jalen Duke, who finished the night with 30 points.
Martin Methodist now breaks until after the Christmas holiday, when they return to action on Monday, Dec. 30 in another soon-to-be-conference matchup versus MSC foe Lindsey Wilson (Ky.).
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in the Curry Christian Life Center.
