WESTWEGO, La. – The Martin Methodist Baseball team took three games at Loyola (La.) for their first conference sweep of the season.
In the opener, Martin Methodist took a one-run lead into the top of the seventh before they added four more runs in a 6-3 victory.
The nightcap saw Martin Methodist crank out a season-high 19 hits en route to a 12-4 victory.
The wins snapped a six-game losing skid for the RedHawks (17-12, 5-6 SSAC) and also gave head coach Mitch Hill his 100th career victory. Hill had accumulated 84 wins in five seasons at Alabama A&M prior to his arrival at Martin Methodist this season.
Tanner Potterfield and Rob McMasters were the offensive standouts in Friday's opener, with both finishing the ballgame 2-for-4. McMasters drove in a pair of runs, while Potterfield drove in three of the six RedHawk runs.
Caleb Brewer (3-0) picked up the win, scattering four hits of shutout ball across five innings. Matt Westberry survived a somewhat shaky outing, allowing three runs across the final two innings, to notch his sixth save of the season.
Friday's second contest saw the RedHawks crank out a season-high 19 hits – highlighted by four RedHawks with three hits each. The first three batters, Brendan Grainger (3-for-6), Trevor McKinley (3-for-6) and JD Isbell (3-for-5) accounted for nine of the 19 hits.
AJ Wilder finished a double shy of the cycle in a standout performance. The senior homered and tripled in his first two at-bats before he popped out in the fifth and flew out in the seventh. Wilder singled in the eighth and was left in the on-deck circle in the ninth.
Zach Rowe allowed three runs across eight innings of work to pick up the win (5-3) for the RedHawks. JD White and Matt Westberry combined to pitch the ninth and close out the victory and give the RedHawks the series win.
The RedHawks closed out the series with an 8-7 victory on Saturday.
