RedHawks Sweep Stillman at Home

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Baseball team stayed hot in SSAC play as it picked up its second sweep in as many weekends with three victories versus Stillman (Ala.) this weekend at Bobby Walker Field.

In Friday's seven-inning opener, Martin Methodist broke the game open in the late innings en route to an 8-4 victory. The nightcap proved to be less dramatic as Martin Methodist cranked out 17 hits in a mercy-rule shortened 17-6 victory.

Due to anticipated inclement weather, Saturday's finale was moved to a 9 a.m. start time, but the early start did not slow down the RedHawks (21-13, 9-6 SSAC) as they defeated Stillman, 15-8, to complete the sweep.

The wins pushed the RedHawks to six straight conference victories – the second-longest active conference win streak in the SSAC.

The RedHawks return to action Monday, April 1, when they host No. 4 nationally-ranked Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.). First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Bobby Walker Field.

GAME ONE:
Martin Methodist 8, Stillman 4:

In the series opener, the RedHawks scored seven runs between the fifth and sixth innings en route to an 8-4 victory.

The RedHawks cranked out eight hits in the seven-inning ballgame, with Trevor McKinley, JD Isbell and Tanner Potterfield driving in two RBIs each. Isbell and Desmond Williams were the RedHawks that notched multiple hits as Isbell finished 2-for-4 and Williams went 2-for-3 with a triple.

Brendan Grainger accounted for the other extra-base hit in the ballgame with a double for the RedHawks. Potterfield and Tyler Robb drove in runs via sacrifice flies for the RedHawks.

RedHawk starter Caleb Brewer finished one out shy of a complete game as he lasted 6.2 innings before being pulled in the seventh. Brewer carried a one-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a solo home run. The sophomore ran into trouble in the seventh, however, but still picked up the win (4-1).

Matt Westberry allowed one hit in relief to finish the ballgame for the RedHawks.

GAME TWO:
Martin Methodist 17, Stillman 6 (7 Innings):

In the nightcap, the RedHawks used 17 hits to post 17 runs en route to a run-rule, seven-inning victory.

Despite giving up three runs in the first, the runs came early and often for the RedHawks, who posted three runs in the bottom of the very first inning themselves. The RedHawks added two more in the second and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third. Ahead 12-3, the RedHawks continued to post runs as they added a single run in the fourth, three in the fifth and a final run in the sixth.

Leading 17-3, the RedHawks allowed the visitors to post three runs in the seventh, but were able to nail down the final three outs and secure the run-rule victory.

Every RedHawk notched at least one base hit as the RedHawks flirted with a new season high in hits, set the previous weekend at Loyola (La.).

Catcher Bradley Huckaba turned in his best performance as a RedHawk, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Designated Hitter Riley Phillips singled and walked twice as he drove in five RBIs. Leadoff man Brendan Grainger came around to score three runs and JD Isbell connected on his first home run of the season.

Zach Rowe scattered five hits and three runs across six innings of work to pick up his sixth victory (6-3) of the season. Dakota Green and Matt Westberry combined to finish the seventh inning.

GAME THREE:
Martin Methodist 15, Stillman 8:

The series finale was pushed to a 9 a.m. Saturday start due to possible inclement weather and the RedHawks made the most of the opportunity, pounding out a new season high 20 hits en route to the seven-run win.

Similar to the second game of the series, every RedHawk in the lineup recorded at least one hit, with the trio of Trevor McKinley, JD Isbell and Rob McMasters notching three hits apiece. McKinley and Isbell connected for home runs – the second in as many games for Isbell – while McMasters drove in three RBIs. McKinley finished a triple short of hitting for the cycle in a 3-for-5, four RBI effort.

At the bottom of the lineup, eight-hole hitter Drew Nipper went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

On the mound, Dakota Crowell struck out six batters in six innings of work to pick up the win (5-3). Dylan Barbee turned in three solid innings of two-hit relief work for his second save of the season.
