MOBILE, Ala. – After they won the first two games on Friday, the Martin Methodist Baseball team fell short in its quest for a sweep, falling 8-2 at No. 18 University of Mobile (Ala.) Saturday afternoon.
The RedHawks (15-7, 3-3 SSAC) allowed four runs in the bottom of the second inning and never recovered versus the Rams (14-6, 4-2 SSAC).
The RedHawks fell behind 5-0 after allowing a single run in the sixth, before they flirted with a comeback attempt in the seventh. Tanner Potterfield and Drew Nipper both drove in runs, with Nipper standing at first representing a possible tying run, but the RedHawks left the bases loaded to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Rams added two more and tacked on a final run in the eighth to secure the win.
RedHawk starter Dakota Crowell lasted 5.1 innings and allowed five earned runs and eight hits before giving way to the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth. The loss (3-2) was the second straight in conference play after starting the year with a pair of relief wins and a start victory versus Northwestern Ohio on Feb. 16.
The RedHawks utilized five different relief pitchers, none of which pitched more than an inning.
Rams starter Bailey Bannon allowed two hits across five shutout innings to pick up the win (3-1).
Five different RedHawks notched hits, with Rob McMasters and Tyler Robb recording the lone extra-base hits of the ballgame.
The RedHawks return to action Wednesday, March 13 with a showdown versus No. 2 nationally-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. First pitch in Wednesday's matchup is set for 3 p.m. at Bobby Walker Field.
