BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — Darrin Jenkins erupted for the third-highest scoring night in the modern era of Martin Methodist Men's Basketball as he scored 38 in a 108-106 overtime win at Blue Mountain (Miss.) Saturday night.
Trailing by one with five seconds left, the RedHawks (13-10, 6-7 SSAC) had their pockets picked, but Blue Mountain committed a turnover with three seconds remaining.
That set the stage for Jenkins, already riding a hot hand, to swish home a triple as time expired for the win.
The game was a wild affair, with the RedHawks erasing a 26-point deficit with just over 16 minutes left in the contest. The RedHawks nearly won the contest in regulation, but Blue Mountain hit a buzzer-beating triple of their own to send the contest to overtime at 92-92.
The RedHawks scored 61 points in the second-half flurry, one of the highest scoring periods in program history. The teams combined for 30 points in the overtime period, with the RedHawks clawing out the two-point edge.
Jenkins 38 points were the most by a RedHawk since former All-American Caleb Chowbay went for 35 versus, ironically, Blue Mountain on Dec. 1, 2016.
The achievement ranks among the best individual scoring nights in program history.
Former All-American guard Ree McCrory scored 40 versus Tougaloo (Miss.) on Nov. 4, 2011 and Deon Moorer scored 39 versus Covenant (Ga.) on Nov. 5, 2005.
Adarion Hudson scored 17 points to flank Jenkins on Saturday. Felix Hayes, Tomonique Marion (13) and Aaron Shambry (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers.
Sam Martin had a solid all-around evening with seven points, seven rebounds and three blocks on the defensive end.
The win was much-needed for the RedHawks, who had dropped two straight in conference play.
The RedHawks will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 15, when they travel to Dalton State (Ga.). The first meeting between the two clubs went down to the wire, with the Roadrunners knocking off the RedHawks by just four back on Jan. 25.
