Firehawks Sweep Final Pair with Bears

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team took the final pair of games with Shawnee State on Sunday. UTS blasted the Bears in game two 12-4 and continued the rout of the home team winning game three 10-2. UTS ended the weekend moving their record to 14-6 (4-1) on the season. This is the best start for UTS baseball since the 2020 season was brought to a halt by the pandemic.

GAME TWO

UTS would score early and often. Blake Birdsong would single to right scoring Landon Rogers and Brantley Holden. UTS would lead 2-0 after one.

Rogers would double would score Devin Buckhalter and Kevin McCarthy. A few batters later Birdsong would smash a grand slam to lift the Firehawks to an 8-1 lead after two.

Rogers would single in the third scoring Holden and Buckhalter in the third. The Firehawks would lead 10-1 heading to the fourth.

McCarthy would single to right scoring Birdsong. Holden would draw a free pass by being hit by a pitch forcing in Ty Garrett. After four innings UTS enjoyed a 12-1 lead.

Tray Lacy would toss the five innings in the start picking up his third win of the year. Lacy would allow three earned runs on five hits. Cody Womble would toss the final pair of innings. Allowing one run on three hits.

GAME THREE

Rogers would get things started with a solo blast in the first. UTS took the early lead of 1-0.

Josh Porter would smash a three-run bomb scoring Noah Junker and Michael Wurtz. UTS would extend the lead to 4-0 after three.

Wurtz would single to center driving in Junker and Rogers boosting the Firehawk lead to 6-0 after five.

Junker would single to left plating Rogers and Zach Hayes. Later in the eighth, Porter would reach on a fielder's choice scoring Junker.

Janzen Powell would score on a wild pitch in the ninth making the score 10-2.

Logan Parrott would toss a complete game in the winning effort. Parrott would allow two runs on seven hits striking out eight.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will travel to Huntsville, Ala. taking on Oakwood on Wednesday, March 8th. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
