Harding Doubles up on Assists and Digs, Firehawks Break Down Barons in Five

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team closed out weekend with come from behind 3-2 win against Brewton-Parker in their Colors for Cancer match on Saturday. This was the 15th meeting* between the two dating back to September 9, 2005. UTS extended their win streak to 15 in-a-row in the series.
UT Southern (7-11, 4-6) dropped the first two sets to a poised Baron team. In the opening set, both teams traded points in the early going. The opening set had 9 ties with the final one coming at 17 all. BPC took eight of the last 12 points to lead by one. In the second set, UTS trailed 12-6 in the beginning but closed the gap to two at 21-23 late in the set. The visitors claimed the second set quieting the home crowd.
Down two sets, the Firehawks and Barons were neck and neck in the early going. The Firehawks built a late set lead and staved off the Barons to force a fourth set. The fourth set began just like the third with both teams trading points. With the score tied at five, UT Southern assembled a 12-7 run to lead 17-12. The Barons tried to quell the Firehawk rally, but UTS tied the match at two each forcing a final fifth set.
The final set began with both teams having 3-0 runs, but the Firehawks followed up with a 6-0 run to blow open the race to 15.

ASSISTS – Senior Laura Howell is closing in on 3,000 career assists. After her 44 helpers tonight, she has 2,982 career assists.
KILLS – Seniors Morgan Avrit and Sophia Ortega both are closing in on 1,000 kills as a Firehawk. Avrit currently has 852. Ortega leads the Firehawks in kills this season with 224 kills. She has 758 kills at UTS.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks will close out the regular season with a four game slate beginning with a trip to William Carey on Friday, October 25. First serve is set for six p.m.
