TIFTON, Ga. – The University of Tennessee Southern women's basketball began a two week road trip on a high note defeating Southern States Athletic Conference new comer Abraham Baldwin 86-42 on Thursday. UTS improved to 6-6 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Five Firehawks tallied double figures in points.
Daysha Reid led all scorers with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
Ashley Dickey netted 19 points.
Kassidy Broussard added 12 points.
Alexis Halley pitched in 10 points.
Silkiari Vazquez-Troche headlined the afternoon with a triple double scoring 10 points, pulling down 10 boards, and dishing out 10 assists.
ABAC took their only lead of the game, 2-0, in the opening minutes, but the Firehawks dominated the remainder of the game. UTS assembled a 20-1 run to close out the final eight minutes of the quarter. Dickey led the run with nine. Vazquez-Troche added six. UTS led 20-3 after one. In the second quarter, UTS shot 7-20 (35%) out shooting the Fillies 4-17 (24%).
In the second half, UTS dialed up the defensive pressure holding ABAC to 27 second half points, nine of which were scored in the final 10 minutes. UTS shot 19-51 for 37 percent, and held ABAC to 10-40 for 25 percent.
BY THE NUMBERS
37.8 – UTS shot 34-90 for 37.8 percent outshooting the Fillies' 15-69 (21.7%).
7 – UTS drained seven triples, three more than ABAC.
11 – UTS connected on 11 of 15 free throws, to ABAC's eight of 18 from the foul line.
67 – The Firehawks pulled down 67 rebounds in the game, 17 more than the Fillies.
15 – UT Southern had 15 assists, Vazquez-Troche had 10.
13 – UTS had 13 steals in the game, 10 more than ABAC.

The Firehawks will travel to West Point, Ga., to play, Point University on Thursday, January, 23. The Firehawks and Skyhawks are set to tipoff at five p.m.
