Firehawks Sweep Ambassadors in Midweek Twin Bill

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball welcomed Oakwood to Royce Hughes Field on Tuesday. UTS scored in every inning but the second in game one, winning 8-5. In the nightcap, Both teams had big innings but the Firehawks doubled up the visitors from the Rocket City 18-9 in five innings. The Firehawks moved to 4-4 on the season.
GAME ONE: UTS 8, OAKWOOD 5
UT Southern cracked the goose eggs first in their first at bat. Mikayla McCain hit a sacrifice fly driving in Haley McDaniel. Kassidy Davis put on in play allowing Lauren Pettie to cross the plate. UTS led 2-0 after one.
The Ambassadors added a pair to knot the game at two in third. In the home half, the Firehawks added another pair. Hannah Lindsey singled scoring Pettie from second. Marie Bodily singled through the right side pushing Lindsey in. UTS led 4-2 after three.
Both teams scored again in the fourth. For UTS Pettie singled through the middle knocking in McDaniel and Ella Singletary. UTS led 6-3 after four.
In the fifth, Hanna Hill doubled to left center, clearing the bases scoring Singletary. Lindsey added the Firehawks final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to left, plating Pettie. UTS led 8-4 heading to the seventh.
Oakwood added two more in their final chance in the loss.
Bailey Abernathy got the start tossing three innings allowing two earned runs. Jayci Boozer (1-0) took the win hurling the final four innings. Boozer allowed three earned runs while recording four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: UTS 18, OAKWOOD 9
In game two, UTS filled the run column in each inning amassing 18 runs. Oakwood got the party started scoring two runs in the first. The Firehawks answered back plating three runs. McCain singled to left driving in Lindsey. Carley Cook singled to left center scoring McCain and Davis. UTS led 3-2 after one.
In the second frame, Lindsey hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Hill. McCain kept the bat hot punching one up the middle. Her hit scored Pettie and McDaniel. Singletary drew a free pass pushing in Davis. UTS led 7-2 after two.
The Ambassadors answered back scoring six runs to briefly take the lead. In the UTS half, Davis singled to left center scoring Lindsey to tie the game at eight. McCain plated two more runs launching a home run to right plating Davis. UTS led 10-8 after three.
Oakwood scored their final run in the fourth, but the Firehawks exploded for eight in the Firehawk fourth. Hill singled to third scoring Singletary and Cook. McDaniel singled to center plating Hill. Lindsey doubled to right center driving in Pettie and McDaniel. Davis doubled to left center knocking in Lindsey. Kaley Ezell made in three consecutive doubled in the inning scoring Davis. Cook hit a sacrifice fly that plated Ezell.
Davis got the start tossing two innings. She allowed five runs on five hits. Bodily (1-0) got the win working the third and fourth. She allowed four earned runs. Singletary tossed the fifth recording one strikeout.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Friday, traveling to #20 Mobile for a double header. First pitch is slated for noon.
