LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team opened the 2025 campaign one day early to avoid possible rain in the forecast on Saturday. The Firehawks won game one 6-1 and dropped a close game two 5-4 to Cumberland on Friday.
GAME ONE: UTS 6, CU 1
Kassidy Davis put the Firehawks on the board first ripping a double to left that drove in Hannah Linsdey in the opening inning. CU would score their lone run in the bottom of the first. Both teams relied on great pitching and superb defense keeping the game knotted at one until the fifth.
Mikayla McCain singled to center scoring
Haley McDaniel giving UTS the lead at 2-1. The Firehawks blew the game wide open in the sixth, plating four runs. Hannah Hill got the party started with a single that forced a Phoenix error that allowed
Stella Gilbreath to cross the plate. McDaniel singled to left scoring
Ella Singletary.
Lauren Pettie reached on a CU error that allowed Hill to score. Linsdey put the ball in play driving in McDaniel.
Singletary(1-0) handcuffed the Phoenix tossing a complete game six hitter. She allowed one earned run while striking out six.
GAME TWO: CU 5, UTS 4
In game two, the Firehawks scored the first two runs of the game as well as the final pair of runs. Lindsey put UTS on the board first singling to center driving in Pettie. McCain doubled the run total in the inning on her single that scored Davis. UTS led 2-0 after one.
CU would score two in the fourth and three in the fifth to lead 5-2. UTS tried to force extra but only could score two in the seventh. In the seventh, Davis hit a sacrifice fly to center driving in Hill. Lindsey singled to right scoring McDaniel.
Glibreath(0-1) got the start working four innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Davis tossed the final two innings allowing three runs on three hits while issuing one free pass.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Monday, February 7, traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to battle Stillman. The double header is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
