Firehawk Pitching Hampers Crimson Pride in Sweep of Series Opening Pair

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team braved the frigid temperatures at Bobby Walker Field on Friday. UTS hosted Indiana University Purdue University Columbus and swiped the opening double header 10-3 and 3-0 on Friday. Both teams will clash again tomorrow at the "Bob" in a race to beat the potential rain in the forecast.
 
GAME ONE: UTS 10, IUPUC 3
For the second consecutive weekend, the Firehawks got on the board first in the second inning. Collin Perkins singled through the left side driving in Zach Chaney. In the next at bat, Devin Buckhalter tripled to right scoring  Mason Billions and Perkins. Brayden Buckner continued to produce for UT Southern singling to center driving in Cody Womble. UTS led 5-0 after two.
In the third, IUPUC plated a run on an extra base hit. In the next inning, Buckner hit a sacrifice fly to left that allowed Womble to cross the plate. Coleman Siniard put a ball in play driving in Gattis Henley. UTS led 7-1 after four.
UTS would add two more in the fifth and one in the sixth. Perkins scored on an IUPIC wild pitch. Cannon Raby hot one back up the middle driving in Buckhalter. In the sixth, Perkins singled to center scoring Chaney. IUPUC plated two runs off a Firehawk error in the seventh.
Chambers McGillberry(2-0) tossed five innings allowing one earned run. He allowed five hits and struck out three. Tavien Tigg tossed a scoreless sixth notching a strikeout. Cooper Bailey and Jake Stuteville tossed the seventh, with Bailey on the hook for two runs.
 
GAME TWO: UTS 3, IUPUC 0
In game two, the Firehawks scored one in the first and a pair in the fifth. Buckner put the ball in play in the first, scoring Henley. UTS led 1-0 after one. In the fifth, Buckner singled to left scoring Henley again. Chaney reached on a fielder's choice allowing Buckner to score on a Crimson Pride error.
Barrett Brown(1-0) pitched an absolute gem. He tossed five innings allowing a lone hit in the fifth and fanning five IUPUC batters. Tigg(Sv. 2) earned his second save tossing the final two innings striking out three.
 
NEXT UP
The Firehawks will hit the field again tomorrow at noon for the final two games of the weekend series at the Bob.
