Firehawks Walk Off a Pair of Wins over Cumberland

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball opened a week long home stand with a sweep over Cumberland on Tuesday. The Firehawks won game one 9-1 in five innings, and UTS walked off a win in game two 5-4. UTS improved to 10-8 on the year.
 
GAME ONE: UTS 9, CU 1 – 5 INNINGS
The Phoeinx scored first in the third plating their only run. In the UTS third, Hannah Lindsey drew a free pass forcing in Lauren Pettie. Marie Bodily singled through the left side scoring Kassidy Davis. Carley Cook walked allowing Mikayla McCain to come home. UTS led 3-1 after three.
In the fourth, McCain reached on a misplay of a routine ground ball to second that allowed Pettie to score. Davis scored on the next play via a throwing error by the Phoenix. Bodily doubled to left center scoring Lindsey. UTS led 7-1 after four.
The Firehawks plated two more in the fifth to walk off game one. Pettie got it started, singling to left center scoring Hanna Hill. Davis had the clutch hit, poking one through the left side bringing home Haley McDaniel.
Ella Singletary (4-4) held the Phoeinx to four hits and one unearned run in the complete game appearance. She struck out six Cumberland batters.
GAME TWO: UTS 5, CU 4
In game two of the day, the Firehawks fell behind 4-0 to the Phoenix. McDaniel singled up the middle driving in Jayci Boozer and Singletary. UTS trailed 4-2.
In the sixth, Pettie singled though the middle driving in Boozer again. UTS trimmed the lead to one heading to the seventh.
Singletary had the walk off hit in game two. She singled up the middle plating Alyssa Mosley and Bodily.
Stella Gilbreath got the start tossing three innings. She allowed four earned runs on four hits. Boozer (2-0) hurled the final four innings allowing four hits.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Friday, March 14, hosting Blue Mountain Christian at Royce Hughes Field. First pitch is set for two p.m.
