MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team traveled to face arch rival Bethel in a midweek twin bill. The Firehawks bewildered Bethel in a come from behind win in the seventh of 8-5. In game two, UT Southern routed the home team in five innings 14-2 on Tuesday. UTS fell to 14-10 overall on the year.
GAME ONE: UTS 8, BU 5
Bethel scored four runs in the second, three of which were unearned to lead 4-0.
In the fourth, the Firehawks shaved the lead to one.
Ella Singletary doubled scoring
Carley Cook,
Marie Bodily, and
Mikayla McCain. UTS trailed 4-3 after four.
In the sixth, both teams added runs. Bodily reached on a fielder's choice scoring
Serenity Halstead. Later in the inning,
Hanna Hill walked forcing in Bodily. Bethel added one in the bottom half to tie the game at five.
Bodily's fielder's choice got the three run seventh started, scoring
Hannah Lindsey. Singletary singled driving in
Kassidy Davis and McCain.
Singletary got the start allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Davis (1-0) took the win tossing 1.2 innings of shutout ball. She allowed two hits.
GAME TWO: UTS 14, BU 2
In game two, the Firehawks blew the game open in the first three innings. Davis singled in the first driving in Pettie and
Haley McDaniel. UTS led 2-0 after one.
In the second, UTS scored five runs. McDaniel reached on a fielder's choice scoring
Stella Gilbreath. Lindsey also reached on a fc that allowed Hill to score on an error. McCain drew a walk forcing in McDaniel. Davis was hit by a pitch pushing in Pettie. Bodily singled driving in Lindsey. UTS led 7-0 after two.
In the third, McCain singled driving in Pettie and McDaniel. Gilbreath was hit by a pitch forcing in McCain. Singletary singled scoring Davis. Hill doubled driving in Singletary, Bodily, and Gilbreath. UTS led 14-1 after three.
Gilbreath got the start tossing two innings allowing only two hits.
Bailey Abernathy (1-0) allowed one unearned run on one hit tossing the final three innings.
