WEST POINT, Ga. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team hit the road on Friday for a weekend swing through Southern Georgia. UT Southern took on Point on Friday, sweeping the Skyhawks 4-3 in eight innings and 12-0 in five. The Firehawks improved to 16-10 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
GAME ONE: UTS 4, PU 3 (8 Inn.)
UT Southern got on the board first in the fifth.
Haley McDaniel scored on a wild pitch. UTS led 1-0 after five. Point tied the game at one in the bottom of the sixth.
Both teams scored in the seventh. McDaniel singled driving in
Ella Singletary. UTS led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom half, the Skyhawks scored a tying run to force extra innings.
In the eighth, Singletary drew a walk forcing in
Mikayla McCain. McDaniel drew a free pass on the next at bat scoring
Kassidy Davis. UTS led 4-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Point had the bases loaded but only could score one run.
Singletary (6-5) took the win tossing eight innings. She allowed three runs on 11 hits and struck out eight.
GAME TWO: UTS 12, PU 0 (5 Inn.)
In game two, the Firehawks scored in the first four innings to blow the game wide open. Davis singled driving in
Lauren Pettie.
Carley Cook singled driving in
Hannah Lindsey.
Alyssa Mosley singled driving in McCain. UTS led 3-0 after one.
In the second, Pettie singled driving in
Hanna Hill. Later in the inning, McDaniel stole home. McCain drove in Pettie on a ground ball. Cook added another rbi on her double, scoring Davis. UTS led 7-0 after two.
In the third, Pettie reached on a fielder's choice and after an error Hill was able to score. McDaniel later scored on a wild pitch. Lindsey hit a ground ball allowing Davis to score. UTS led 10-0 after three.
In the fourth, Mosley singled driving in Davis. Singletary put one in play that allowed Cook to score.
Gilbreath (7-5) tossed all five innings allowing four hits.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Saturday, March 29, battling Abraham Baldwin in Tifton, Ga. The double header is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
