HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team concluded the season home and away series with Oakwood on Tuesday. The Firehawks scored in all seven innings in a landslide win 23-7 in seven innings. UTS improved to 10-22 overall on the season.
Devin Buckhalter stole third and scored on a throwing error for the first run on the game. On the next pitch,
Cody Womble singled to left center driving in
Collin Perkins.
Brayden Buckner hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Womble to score. UTS led 3-0 after one.
In the second both UTS runs were unearned after an Ambassador error. Buckhalter, after being hit by a pitch for the second time, scored via the OU miscue. Womble smashed a double to left center scoring Perkins. UTS led 5-0 after two.
In the third, the Firehawks scored two more.
Cannon Raby doubled to left center driving in
Cole Barnett.
Jamil Betancourt hit a sacrifice fly to right field plating Raby. UTS led 7-2 after three.
In the fourth, Buckner homered to left center to give the Firehawks an 8-2 lead.
In the fifth, Buckhalter doubled down the left field line scoring Betancourt. A couple of batters later, Womble singled to left driving in Perkins and Buckhalter. UTS led 11-6 after five.
In the sixth and seventh, the Firehawks scored a touchdown in each inning to end the game in seven.
Gage Beckner singled to right center scoring
Grayson Willis. A few pitches later, Betancourt scored on a wild pitch.
Mason Billions blasted a grand slam to cap off the six run sixth. UTS led 17-7 after six.
In the seventh,
Zach Chaney singled to left center scoring Raby. Beckner singled through the left side scoring Chaney. Beckner later scored on a wild pitch. Billions hit is second round tripper scoring three runs.
Jake Stuteville (1-0) tossed two innings in win by committee. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
Barrett Brown worked the third inning allowing two earned runs on five hits.
Chambers McGilberry pitched a spotless fourth fanning two batters on nine pitches.
Danton Rinehart and
Cooper Bailey split the fifth inning, Rinehart allowed four earned runs. Bailey continued through the sixth allowing one earned run on a Oakwood home run. Bailey struck out four hitters.
Jackson Moon mopped up the seventh only allowing one baserunner.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks will return to Bobby Walker Field for a SSAC weekend series with Mobile beginning on Friday, March 28. Game one is set for three p.m. with game two to follow.
