GULF SHORES, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball continued the weekend in the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Firehawks defeated William Woods 9-1 in five innings and defeated Nelson University (AZ) 7-2. UTS improved to 8-8 on the year.
GAME THREE: UTS 9, WWU 1 – 5 INNINGS
The Firehawks replaced the goose egg in all five innings, scattering nine runs.
Marie Bodily reached on an error by the Owls that allowed
Haley McDaniel to put UTS up 1-0. In the second,
Kassidy Davis singled to left plating McDaniel and
Hanna Hill. William Woods scored their lone run in the third. The Firehawks added two in the home half.
Lauren Pettie drew a walk pushing
Ella Singletary across the plate. Davis was hit by a pitch scoring Hill. UTS led 5-1 after three. In the fourth, Lindsey scored via an Owls' error. In the fifth, Bodily singled to right scoring Davis.
Carley Cook had the walk off double that scored Lindsey and Bodily.
Singletary (3-4) held the Owls a lone hit in the third. She allowed one unearned run and fanned eight batters.
GAME FOUR: BU 7, NUAZ 2
In game two of the day, the Firehawks continued to plate runs in bunches.
Mikayla McCain doubled to center scoring
Lauren Pettie in the first. In the third, UTS doubled their lead on a sacrifice fly by Lindsey scoring Davis. The Warriors added one in the third to trail 2-1.
In the fourth, the Firehawks netted five runs to blow the game open. McCain drew a walk forcing McDaniel across the plate. Bodily singled to left driving in Pettie. Lindsey was issued a free pass forcing in Davis and McCain would later score. Cook singled through the right side driving in Bodily. Nelson would add one in the fifth but couldn't draw any closer.
Stella Gilbreath (3-4) tossed the complete game allowing two earned runs on four hits. She struck out five.

The Firehawks are back in action on Tuesday, March 11, hosting Cumberland at Royce Hughes Field. First pitch is set for two p.m.
