PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team began their final home stand of the year on Tuesday welcoming Freed-Hardeman to Royce Hughes Field. After a slow start in game one, both teams kept the scoreboard busy as the Lions won the opener 12-6, and the Firehawks claimed game two 7-4. The Firehawks improved to 24-14 overall on the year.
GAME ONE: FHU 12, UTS 6
In the third, Freed, started scoring with a three run homer. UTS answered back plating a pair.
Marie Bodily reached on a fielder's choice allowing
Lauren Pettie and
Kassidy Davis to score. UTS trailed 3-2 after three.
In the fourth, the Firehawks took the lead with four runs in the frame.
Haley McDaniel singled to left center as
Hannah Lindsey tried to score. Lindsey was gunned down at the plate, but the FHU catcher was ruled for obstruction. Pettie followed with a double down the left field line scoring McDaniel. Bodily added two more runs with her single to short. Her hit scored Davis and Pettie. UTS led 6-3 after four.
In the fifth, Freed added four more runs with a grand slam, and added five in the sixth.
Ella Singletary (9-7) tossed four innings allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out five.
Macey Ciramella tossed two innings allowing five runs on seven hits.
Bailey Abernathy tossed a two hit seventh.
GAME TWO: UTS 7, FHU 4
In game two, the Lions scored one run in the first taking their only lead in the game. The Firehawks added three runs in the second to jump in front. McDaniel singled to left center driving in Lindsey and Singletary. Pettie added a double down the left field line plating McDainel. UTS led 3-1.
After the Lions added three more, UTS tied the game back up at four. Singletary singled to left driving in Bodily to end the third at four each.
In the fifth, Pettie broke the tie with her single to left. Her blast scored Singletary.
Mikayla McCain hit a sacrifice fly to left driving in McDaniel. UTS led 6-4.
UTS added one more in the sixth.
Hanna Hill doubled to left center plating
Serenity Halstead.
Stella Gilbreath (8-7) tossed the complete game in the winning effort. She allowed three earned runs on 11 hits.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Thursday, April 17, hosting Mobile at Royce Hughes Field. The double header is scheduled to start at noon.
