PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team hit the field for the second consecutive home double header of the week, welcoming in the University of Mobile. The Firehawks routed the Rams 8-1 in game one, and UTS outlasted UM with a walk-off grand slam in extras to claim two pivotal SSAC wins. GAME ONE: UTS 8, UM 1
In the opening inning, Mobile scored their lone run on a passed ball to lead early 1-0.
The Firehawks would tie the game on a MiKayla McCain double to right center that scored
Kassidy Davis. After three innings both teams were tied at one.
In the fourth, UTS blew open the game scoring seven runs.
Haley McDaniel commenced the party, singling to short. Her hit drove in
Ella Singletary. Davis put one in play driving in
Hanna Hill. McCain singled through the right side knocking in
Lauren Pettie and McDaniel.
Hannah Lindsey doubled to left center scoring
Marie Bodily and McCain. Singletary added the final run off her single to left that plated Lindsey.
Singletary (10-7) hurled a complete game nine hitter. She allowed one unearned run and struck out eight.
GAME TWO: UTS 7, UM 3 (8)
In game two, the Rams never trailed in the game until the final hit. UM took the lead in the second. Hill hit a slow roller up the middle that scored McCain. The score was tied after two innings at one each.
In the third, both teams would add one more run. McCain doubled to right center batting in Pettie. After three innings the score was deadlocked at two.
Mobile took a late lead in the fifth off a Firehawk error.
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, McDaniel leveled the game at three with a single through the right side that scored Lindsey.
In the bottom of the eighth after a bang bang play at first, Davis blasted the 1-1 pitch down the right field line and onto Baker Intramural Field to walk off a two game sweep of the Rams. On her blast, Pettie, McDaniel, and Hill were driven in.
Stella Gilbreath (9-7) tossed the complete game working eight innings. She allowed two earned runs on 14 hits.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Friday, April 18, hosting William Carey in the regular season home finale at Royce Hughes Field. The double header is scheduled to start at noon.
