PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team hit the field for the final home twin bill for the regular season, welcoming in William Carey University. The Firehawks Crusaders squared off into extra innings in game one, as WCU took game one 2-0 and held on to claim game two 5-3. The Firehawks moved to 26-16 overall and 13-11 in league play on the year.
GAME ONE: WCU 2, UTS 0 (9)
It took more than seven innings in this instant classic of a pitcher's dual. In the opening inning, WCU had a runner charging home on a ground ball but a on target lag to the plate by
Carley Cook and a well placed tag by
Mikayla McCain kept the Crusaders out of the lead.
Ella Singletary (10-8) suffered the nine inning loss. She allowed one earned run on 11 hits while striking out eight. Her Crusader counterpart tossed a four hit shutout fanning seven Firehawk batters.
GAME TWO: WCU 5, UTS 3
In game two, the Crusaders scored in the opening frame holding the lead until the home half. The Firehawks added two runs to lead 2-1 after one.
Kassidy Davis singled to center driving in
Haley McDaniel. Cook later hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring
Lauren Pettie.
WCU added runs in the third and fifth holding a 4-2 lead.
In the seventh, Carey scored one more insurance run. In the home half, Pettie started the charge with her single up the middle. Her hit scored Singletary. The Firehawks had the winning run at the plate but couldn't extend the game.
Stella Gilbreath (9-8) tossed five innings allowing four earned runs. Davis hurled the final two innings allowing one earned run on four hits.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Saturday, April 26, closing out the regular season against Blue Mountain Christian. The double header is scheduled to start at two p.m.
