PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team closed out their postponed SSAC weekend hosting Brewton-Parker on Tuesday. The Firehawks run ruled the Barons in game one 9-1 in five innings and fell in game two 9-6. The Firehawks improved to 22-12 overall and 10-8 in conference play.
GAME ONE: UTS 9, BPC 1
The Firehawks struck first in the second frame, scoring five runs.
Ella Singletary drew a free pass forcing in
Mikayla McCain.
Hanna Hill followed up with a double to left center scoring
Carley Cook and
Marie Bodily.
Haley McDaniel laced a single up the middle plating Hill and Singletary. UTS led 5-0 after two.
In the third, McCain hit her second home run on the season making the score 6-0.
BPC took advantage of a UTS error to score a run in the fourth.
In the fifth, Singletary singled to left scoring
Hannah Lindsey.
Lauren Pettie walked off the game with a two run double down the right field line. Her hit scored Singletary and Cook.
Singletary (8-6) had another stellar SSAC outing for the Firehawks. She allowed one unearned run on six hits.
GAME TWO: BPC 9, UTS 6
In game two, the Firehawks trailed early 4-0 after Brewton-Parker scored a one in the first and three in the second.
In the fourth, Cook doubled to right field scoring McCain. UTS trailed 4-1 after four.
In the fifth, BPC added one run. UTS scored two to shave into the lead. McDaniel stole second that led to a Baron error allowing Hill to cross the plate.
Kassidy Davis singled up the middle driving in McDaniel. UTS trailed 5-3 after five.
In the sixth, BPC added two runs, and the Firehawks added three. Cook doubled to right center scoring Lindsey.
Serenity Halstead came in on a wild pitch. McDaniel grounded out allowing Singletary to score. UTS trailed 7-6 going to the seventh.
Stella Gilbreath (7-6) took the loss tossing 1.2 innings allowing two earned runs. Davis fired the final 5.1 innings allowing four earned runs.
NEXT UP
The Firehawks are back in action on Friday, April 11, battling Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. The double header is scheduled to start at two p.m.
