UT Southern Retires Mobile and Brewton-Parker, Firehawks Fall to Crusaders in SSAC Championship Third Place Game

DECATUR, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team concluded the rain plagued SSAC Championship on Sunday. The Firehawks opened the day concluding a rain halted rematch with fifth seed Mobile. The Firehawks walked off the win 2-1 in the seventh. UT Southern kept the magic alive walking off Brewton-Parker 4-3, after trailing 3-2 for the bulk of the game. In the third place game, UTS ran out of steam falling in six innings to eventual runner-up William Carey, 8-0. UTS moved to 30-19 on the year. This is the first time since 2019 softball has logged 30 wins, as the RedHawks went 31-25.
UTS 2, UM 1
In a game that lasted almost 15 hours, UTS took the lead on Saturday evening scoring one run in the third inning. Lauren Pettie stole second, and a Ram throwing error allowed her score from second. UTS led 1-0 after three.
In the fourth, Mobile plated a run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The game was halted in the top of the seventh with one UM player out. The game was resumed after a 12 hour delay, Ella Singletary (13-8) shut down the rams holding them to just one run for the game.
In the home half, Hannah Lindsey doubled to right center to begin the rally. Singletary followed with a single to shallow left moving Lindsey to third with one out. Hanna Hill had the walk off sacrifice fly to shallow left. The Ram defender dove to make the catch near the foul line that allowed Lindsey to walk across the plate.
Stella Gilbreath got the start. She tossed 3.1 innings allowing one earned run on one hit. Singletary worked the final 3.2 innings. She allowed one hit and struck out two.
UTS 4, BPC 3
UTS battled BPC in the fourth place game on Sunday afternoon. UTS struck first in the opening frame. Pettie aided the Firehawks to their opening run by stealing second. Haley McDaniel scored on a Baron throwing error. UTS led 1-0.
In the second, BPC plated three in the second to poise themselves to cruise to a win.
In the third, UT Southern chipped away at the two run lead off a Lindsey sacrifice fly. Her hit drove in Kassidy Davis. UTS trailed 3-2 after three.
Down to their final three outs, the Firehawks got two big hits from Lindsey and Marie Bodily. Lindsey's single through the left side, plated Davis. Bodily followed up with a single to right scoring Elise Lausee.
Singletary (14-8) tossed the complete game allowing three earned runs on six hits.
WCU 8, UTS 0 (6)
In the third place game, the Crusader's handcuffed the Firehawks at the plate. Only Pettie and Singletary recorded hits.
Gilbreath (9-11) took the loss pitching three innings. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits. Davis tossed the final innings. She allowed one earned run on five hits.
