PULASKI, Tenn. – No. 25 Tennessee Southern battled a top-15 opponent Friday but came up short in both games, dropping a twin bill to No. 12 Mobile at Royce Hughes Field.
Mobile 7, Tennessee Southern 1
The Firehawks kept things tight early before Mobile used a big middle inning to pull away.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, UT Southern found its answer in the fourth. McCain delivered a solo home run to center to even the game at 1-1, providing the Firehawks' lone run of the contest.
Mobile responded in the fifth with a four-run inning to seize control, then added two more in the sixth to extend the lead.
McDaniel led the offense with two hits, while McCain added a home run and an RBI. King recorded a hit, and Bodily, Cook, and Pettie each contributed at-bats that helped generate opportunities.
In the circle, Gilbreath went 5.1 innings, while Boozer provided relief down the stretch.
Mobile 4, Tennessee Southern 3
The nightcap saw the Firehawks jump out early and battle throughout, but Mobile rallied late to complete the sweep.
UT Southern struck in the second inning. King singled to start the rally before Cook doubled to left center to bring in the first run. Pettie followed with a double to plate another, and McDaniel capped the inning with an RBI double as the Firehawks built a 3-0 lead.
Mobile chipped away with single runs in the third and fourth before tying the game in the sixth.
The Firehawks threatened in the seventh as McDaniel singled and moved into scoring position, but UT Southern could not push across the go-ahead run.
McDaniel led the offense with two hits, including a double and an RBI. Cook added two hits, including a double and an RBI, while Pettie recorded a double and an RBI. King and McCain each added hits, and Lindsey contributed a sacrifice.
In the circle, Singletary went the distance, allowing four runs while striking out three.
Tennessee Southern returns to action Saturday, April 18, hosting No. 13 William Carey.
