ATHENS, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern men's golf team turned in an impressive performance on its home course this week, earning a runner-up finish at the Firehawk Fall Invitational hosted at Canebrake Golf Club.
The Firehawks posted a three-round score of 863 (284-288-291) to finish second in a competitive 13-team field. UT Southern finished at 1-under par for the tournament and trailed only tournament champion Cumberlands, which finished at 12-under. The Firehawks finished ahead of nationally competitive programs including Faulkner, Johnson University, Cumberland, Freed-Hardeman, and William Carey.
Competing in front of a home crowd, UT Southern placed four golfers inside the top 20 and three inside the top 18 to secure one of the program's strongest performances of the early season.
Jack Stowe led the Firehawks with a tie for fifth-place finish at 2-under par. Stowe carded rounds of 73, 69, and 72 to finish with a 54-hole total of 214. His second-round 69 helped propel UT Southern into contention entering the final round and marked one of the team's best rounds of the event.
Tyler Wilson also delivered a strong performance, tying for 14th at 1-over par with rounds of 68, 74, and 75. Wilson's opening-round 68 was the lowest round recorded by a Firehawk during the tournament and left him tied for the individual lead after the first day of competition.
Leo-Paul Cesari added another top-20 performance, tying for 18th at 218 (+2). Cesari improved each day and closed the tournament with a 1-under-par 71 in the final round.
Fresh off earning SSAC Men's Golfer of the Week honors, Nico Garcia continued his strong start to the season. Garcia tied for 20th overall after posting rounds of 71, 75, and 73 for a three-round total of 219 (+3).
UT Southern's B team also made a strong showing, finishing ninth overall at 895. Ethan Lunsford led the squad with an even-par tournament total of 216, good for a tie for 11th place.
Cumberlands captured the team championship at 852 (-12), while UT Southern finished second at 863 (-1). Faulkner and Johnson University shared third place at 867 (+3).
