NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Both Vee Young and Jessy Christopher earned the respect of league coaches this season, as All-TranSouth teams were announced Monday evening. Young was awarded her second first team nod, while Christopher earned her first conference honor on the second team. Additionally, the RedHawks placed seven on the TranSouth Scholar Athlete team.
Young, who ranks third nationally in scoring with 22.1 points per game, has turned in a team-high 15 double-doubles this season, averaging a double-double with 10.2 rebounds. The senior joined the 1,000 point club with 663 total so far, including a career-high 39 points against Mid-Continent. On senior day, Young completed her two years on her home court with a career-high 20 rebounds. Young was named TSAC Player of the Week four times this season, and currently averages 1.7 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.
Christopher with her first award of her career has spent much of the season ranked second nationally in assists with 6.03 per game. Her season-high performance came against Mid-Continent University where she tallied 18 total assists. The junior averages 9.7 points, three rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game.
Both Christopher and Young were named as Scholar Athletes, along with Bobbi Dodson, Erika Bullock, Rikki Sanders, Micah Anderson, and Becca Smithson. Christopher, Smithson, and Sanders also were recognized with the qualifications as NAIA Scholar Athletes. TranSouth Scholar Athletes must be a sophomore or above in academic standing and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 (on a 4.0 scale), while NAIA Scholar Athletes are juniors and above with at least one year at their institution and a 3.5 GPA.
MMC begins the TranSouth tournament on Tuesday, February 28th at Cumberland University. Tip-off is slated for 7pm.
