Women's Basketball: Hot-Shooting RedHawks Down Lions

McKENZIE, Tenn. – Both Rachel Brown and Nina Mills posted the best offensive afternoons of their careers as Martin Methodist claimed a commanding 91-64 win over Bryan (Tenn.) College at the Bethel University Classic Saturday afternoon.

It was an inside-outside combination for the RedHawks (4-1) as they raced to a 50-35 halftime lead and never looked back against the Lions (1-3) in the opening matchup of the two-day classic.

Brown notched her career-high 28 points thanks to an impressive 5-of-6 shooting display from beyond the arc. Prior to Saturday's contest, the senior had not even attempted more than five triples in a contest, but had no trouble making the Lions pay from distance.

When Brown wasn't draining jumpers from the perimeter, she was packing the paint and forcing the Lions to send her to the free throw line. Brown sank 7-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe in the victory.

Flanking Brown in the scoresheet was Mills, who posted a career-best 18 points on a 5-of-11 shooting night. The sophomore returned from a recent injury in style, draining two 3-pointers and adding six more points at the free throw line.

In addition to Brown and Mills, the RedHawks had another duo finish in double figures in Janasia Williams and Kyoko Wade, who scored 12 and 11 points each.

For the game, the RedHawks shot a blistering 26-for-57 for a .456 shooting percentage while limiting the Lions to just 17 field goals on 59 total attempts.

As a team, the RedHawks outrebounded the Lions, 46-27. 38 of the rebounds came on the defensive end for the RedHawks.

The win also ensured RedHawks head coach Jamy Bechler of a victory against the Lions since departing as the club's head coach four years ago.

"This was the second game in a row that we played well and executed our game plan defensively," Bechler said. "Bryan College has players that really know how to play basketball. The final score was not at all indicative of what kind of team Bryan has. They had a bit of an off night and that really helped us. We were also fortunate today that our shots went in like they did. Rachel (Brown) finally broke out and hit shots like we know she can. Some of those were from 25-28 feet. Nina (Mills) did a great job today as she has battled back from a serious ankle injury last week. Overall, I was pleased with our performance."

The RedHawks return to action Monday night when they host Oakwood (Ala.) University in just their second home contest of the young season.

Tipoff in Monday's game is set for 6 p.m. at the Curry Christian Life Center.
