PULASKI, Tenn. – For the second time in as many weeks, a Martin Methodist player has received TranSouth honors as Alley Benefield was named the league's Player of the Week by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Benefield, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Summertown, Tenn., finished a near-perfect 6-of-8 at the plate last week for the RedHawks. Benefield got off to a strong start, driving in a pair of runs – one of which was a solo home run – in the RedHawks 10-5 win over Tennessee Wesleyan at the Alabama Artic Blast in Decatur, Ala. The sophomore followed her Friday performance up with a perfect 4-for-4 afternoon Saturday against No. 7 William Carey (Miss.) University. On the week, Benefield drove in three runs and accounted for two of the club's five extra-base hits.
The award is the first of Benefield's career and she joins teammate Chae Ellis as the second RedHawk to receive the honor this season.
