Stein's Free Kick Lifts RedHawks Past Patriots

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.Marcus Stein scored the first goal of his Martin Methodist career at the most opportune time as Men's Soccer defeated University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Tuesday afternoon, 2-1, in double overtime.

The win snapped a three-match losing skid for the RedHawks (5-8-3) in their final non-conference match of the regular season. The win marked the first-ever victory for the RedHawks against the Patriots (5-9-3) in just the second all-time meeting between the two programs.

The contest got off to a fast start for the RedHawks as forward Michael Fulton followed up a shot with a rebound into the back of the net and a one-goal lead less than three minutes into the contest.

The lead would hold up for the entirety of the first half as the teams hit halftime with the RedHawks still leading by the lone goal. The shot department saw both teams produce seven first-half chances apiece.

The Patriots equalized late in the contest, however, as they nabbed a goal with just over five minutes left in regulation to force overtime. The overtime period marked the sixth contest this season that had gone into overtime for the RedHawks.

And, after a scoreless opening extra period, it appeared as if a draw might be the outcome in Tuesday's contest.

But that's when Stein hovered over a free kick from nearly 30 yards outside the Patriot penalty area. The 6-foot-5 sophomore blasted a shot that rattled into the back of the net and sent the RedHawk bench into a frenzy.

Yohann Bedos made four saves in 105 minutes of work to collect the victory in net for the RedHawks, who outshot the Patriots by a 16-11 margin on the evening.

The goal was the first of Stein's career and gave the RedHawks a much-needed spark as they head to their regular-season SSAC finale Saturday afternoon at Dalton State (Ga.) College.

Kickoff in Saturday's contest is set for 6:30 p.m. in Dalton, Georgia.
