ALEXANDRIA, La. – The second-seeded Martin Methodist Softball team surrendered just two runs, but was upset by No. 3 seed Williams Baptist (Ark.), 2-0, Monday afternoon in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round.
The RedHawks (45-17) allowed just five hits on the day and starter Brittany Bishop did not allow an earned run, but the RedHawks were plagued by uncharacteristic defensive woes and a season-high five errors.
The Eagles (36-19) opened the scoring between the two clubs in the top of the third when leadoff hitter Madelyn Poe walked, was bunted over to second and then scored on consecutive fielder's choice attempts. Bishop attempted to cut down the runner at home plate, but a wild throw allowed the eventual game-winning run to score.
Williams Baptist again capitalized on RedHawk defensive miscues in the top of the seventh for an insurance run. Despite the two runs, the RedHawks limited the damage as they stranded 10 Williams Baptist baserunners on the afternoon.
At the plate, the RedHawks collected just four hits on the afternoon, but had their best scoring chance of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth. Ashton Edwards singled up the middle to lead off the frame and pinch runner Baylee Hammons advanced to third on consecutive sacrifice bunt attempts. Hammons was stranded at third, however, as Taylor Hurford struck out swinging.
Bishop (26-7) suffered the loss in the circle for the RedHawks. The senior tossed 6.2 innings of work with just five hits and the two unearned runs allowed. Bishop issued just one walk and struck out a pair in the loss.
Rylee Rogers (23-9) collected the win for the Eagles. Rogers pitched the complete game shutout and struck out three in the victory.
With the defeat, the RedHawks fall to an elimination contest on Tuesday afternoon against No. 4 seed Oklahoma Wesleyan, which was defeated by tournament host LSU-Alexandria, 5-0, Monday afternoon.
First pitch in Tuesday's contest is set for 1 p.m. in Alexandria, Louisiana.
