RedHawks Fend off Pesky Knights

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Martin Methodist Women's Basketball team picked up a 62-53 victory over No. 8 seed Middle Georgia State College Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.

The win was a hard-fought one for the RedHawks (25-6), who led for a majority of the contest, but never fully seized control of the ballgame until the final few minutes. The RedHawks led by as many as 11 down the stretch and ultimately preserved a nine-point win.

Three RedHawk reserves led the scoring in Thursday's victory as Treasure Hunt, Lacey Reed and Taylor McNairy combined for 33 of the team's 62 points. Hunt led the charge with 14 points while Reed added 10 and McNairy poured in nine.

Hunt and McNairy provided their sparks from beyond the arc as the duo combined for a 7-of-10 clip from downtown. Reed, meanwhile, was 2-of-3 from the floor but finished 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

Jemia Carpenter scored seven points, but tracked down 11 rebounds in the win.

Dexshalyn Polite led the Knights (8-21) with 26 points on a 10-of-22 shooting night. For the game, the Knights finished 18-of-62 for an icy 29 percent from the floor.

With the win, the RedHawks punched their ticket to the tournament semifinal, which will be held Friday at 5 p.m. The semifinal is the third in the last four years for the RedHawks, who will meet either No. 4 seed hometown Faulkner (Ala.) University or No. 5 seed William Carey (Miss.) University.
