RedHawks Use Potent Offense for Split with No. 12 William Carey

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist College softball team used a huge 7th inning in the first game of Friday's doubleheader on their way to a split with No. 12 William Carey (Miss.) University on Senior Day. The RedHawks combined for 22 total hits on the day, including five multi-hit performances, while BAYLEE MELLOTT hurled six innings of one-run ball for the victory.

MMC struck first in game one, as LEISHA YAMAUCHI drove home TAYLOR FERGUSON on an RBI base hit in the opening inning of play. The one run edge lasted until the top of the 6th when a Crusaders run knotted the game at 1-1.

The RedHawks responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning using a total team effort hat scored eight runs on seven hits to secure a monumental six-inning run rule of William Carey.

Ferguson was 3-for-4 with two doubles en route to the victory, as Yamauachi added two hits and two RBI in the affair. ADDIE BAIRD turned in two hits and three RBI, and MACKENZIE MCMAHAN drove in two runs. Mellott fanned four batters, and did not give up a single free base. The junior allowed only a single run on seven hits, as she earned her 8th win on the season.

MMC again grabbed an early edge in game two, leading 2-1 until the fourth inning when the Crusaders took over by a 3-2 score. WCU would go on to score a run in the next three innings, and despite a late comeback attempt, the RedHawks fell 6-4 in the nightcap.

KAYLEE DAVIS suffered the loss in the circle, giving up four runs on 11 hits. The RedHawk lineup contributed seven hits in the matchup, including RBI from IVEY KANE and CAYLEE PORTER.

The RedHawks honored seniors Yamauchi, Kane, and four-year veteran TAYLOR HURFORD between games.

Martin Methodist moved to 19-19 on the season, and 9-11 in SSAC play. The RedHawks will take to a road swing for conference play, heading to No 18 Faulkner (Ala.) University on Tuesday, April 17th. A weekend trip to Middle Georgia State College and Brewton-Parker College will represent the last of regular season travel for the RedHawks, as the host No. 7 University of Mobile (Ala.) on Tuesday, April 24th for their final regular season series.
