RedHawks Lose Win Streak at William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Martin Methodist Women's Basketball team saw its seven-game SSAC win streak snapped Thursday night in an 81-58 loss at William Carey (Miss.) in the SSAC Women's Basketball Game of the Week.

The RedHawks (13-6, 7-2 SSAC) suffered their first defeat since the calendar flipped to 2019 and lost their first conference tilt since a loss at University of Mobile (Ala.) on Nov. 29. The contest marked the first road game for the RedHawks after four straight home matchups. Most recently, the RedHawks held off Florida College, 81-75, in overtime.

William Carey controlled the contest for virtually the entire match, eventually leading by as many as 25 early in the second half.

The Crusaders (6-7, 5-4 SSAC) built a 23-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

As a team, the RedHawks connected on just 19-of-50 attempts from the floor and were 3-of-17 from beyond the arc. William Carey finished 33-of-66 from the field for an exactly 50 percent clip. The Crusaders enjoyed a whopping 50-24 rebounding advantage in the victory.

The loss soured a special night for RedHawk junior guard Brooklyn Blanchard, whose 14 points moved her to over 1,000 career points. Blanchard became just the ninth RedHawk to achieve the feat and just the second since 2012.

The RedHawks will need to turn around quickly as they are scheduled to meet defending SSAC tournament champion Loyola (La.) on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in New Orleans.
