PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Women's Basketball team opened up 2019 with a pair of SSAC victories in the Curry Christian Life Center.
The RedHawks opened 2019 in style as they cruised to an 82-66 victory versus Middle Georgia State Thursday night in the Curry Christian Life Center.
On Saturday, the RedHawks followed up with a 69-50 victory versus Faulkner (Ala.).
The contests marked the first SSAC home tilts of the season for the RedHawks (11-5, 5-1 SSAC), who improved to 7-0 at home this season and moved into a three-way tie for first place in the SSAC standings.
The RedHawks return to action next week for two more home matchups when they host Brewton-Parker (Ga.) (Jan. 10) and Florida College (Jan 12).
Martin Methodist 69, Faulkner (Ala.) 50:
The RedHawks closed the week with a strong performance in a 19-point, wire-to-wire victory versus Faulkner (Ala.).
Freshman guard Faith Sherrow notched a career-best 22 points in the blowout victory. Sherrow was electric from beyond the arc as she connected on 6-of-11 shots from distance and finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Sherrow was flanked on the perimeter by Treasure Hunt, who scored 17 on the night. 12 of the junior's 17 came from downtown as she finished 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and 6-of-8 from the floor.
As a team, the RedHawks went 11-of-24 from beyond the arc, the most versus an NAIA opponent since the RedHawks buried 16 triples versus Faulkner down in Montgomery last January.
On the opposing sideline, the Eagles (9-5, 2-3 SSAC) connected on just 4-of-23 attempts from distance.
No other RedHawk finished in double-figures on the night, but Taylor McNairy delivered an all-around performance for the RedHawks with her seven point, five assists, five steals and four rebounds.
Martin Methodist 82, Middle Georgia 66:
The RedHawks opened 2019 in style as they cruised to an 82-66 victory versus Middle Georgia State Thursday night in the Curry Christian Life Center.
Middle Georgia led on just one occasion early in the first quarter, as the RedHawks built their lead to as many as 18 just before halftime. The RedHawks held a 24-12 edge after the first quarter and took a 47-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half saw the teams play to a stalemate in the third quarter and the RedHawks keep the Knights at bay in the fourth and final frame.
Five different RedHawks finished in double-figures, led by 14 points from Faith Sherrow and Destiney Williams. Treasure Hunt added 12 points, while Brooklyn Blanchard and Areyanna Majors finished with 11 and 10, respectively.
The RedHawks handed out 16 assists while they committed just 13 turnovers. On the defensive side of the ball, the RedHawks forced 21 turnovers – 14 of which were RedHawk steals.
Dexshalyn Polite led the Knights with 26 points, but went 6-of-15 from the floor. Polite scored 14 of her 26 at the free throw line.
