PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Women's Basketball team cruised to a 74-47 victory versus William Carey (Miss.) Thursday night in its penultimate home contest of the 2018-19 season.
The RedHawks (19-10, 13-6) never trailed in the contest and led by a commanding 17-4 margin after the first quarter. The second quarter saw the two teams play to a 17-17 stalemate, to put the home side ahead, 34-21, at the break.
The third quarter is where the RedHawks put the game to bed as they outscored the Crusaders (10-14, 9-11 SSAC) by a 22-11 margin. The lead ballooned to as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter as the RedHawks sailed to the easy victory.
The win marked a measure of revenge for the RedHawks, who suffered an 81-58 defeat to the Crusaders when the teams met in Hattiesburg on Jan. 17.
Three RedHawks finished in double-figures in the blowout win, led by Faith Sherrow's 14 points. Keely Ellison flanked Sherrow with 11 points while Bethany Lamon added 10.
Sherrow (4-of-7) and Ellison (3-of-6) accounted for seven 3-pointers. Treasure Hunt (2-of-5) added a pair as the RedHawks finished 10-of-28 from downtown in the victory.
Despite the double-digit efforts from Sherrow, Ellison and Lamon, the RedHawk scoresheet was a diverse one as 10 different players found the scoring column. Destiney Williams and Brooklyn Blanchard added eight each, while Hunt joined Areyanna Majors and Lacey Reed with six points apiece.
The RedHawks dished out 18 assists and committed just 12 turnovers, while they forced William Carey into 23 giveaways – 15 of which were RedHawk steals.
Rachel Thompson led the Crusaders with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
The win marked a third straight for the RedHawks and pushed the club to 11 wins at home this season.
The RedHawks will close out their regular season Saturday afternoon with a showdown versus No. 25 Loyola (La.).
The RedHawks own just three wins in 12 all-time meetings versus the Wolf Pack (22-6, 16-3 SSAC), but claimed a win the last time the teams met in the Curry Christian Life Center on Jan. 11, 2018.
Loyola comes into the contest well rested after they did not feature in a Thursday matchup.
Saturday's contest marks Senior Day as the RedHawks celebrate the careers of their two seniors – Destiney Williams and Keely Ellison. The ceremony will take place shortly after the conclusion of the contest.
Tipoff in Saturday's matchup is set for 2 p.m. in the CLC.
