BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – The Martin Methodist Softball team dropped the opener but salvaged a split with a victory in the nightcap Friday afternoon at Blue Mountain (Miss.).
The contests were the first road SSAC matchups of the season for the RedHawks (11-8, 4-2 SSAC). The RedHawks suffered a 3-1 loss in the first ballgame, but rallied for a 6-3 win in the second half of Friday's doubleheader.
In the opener, the RedHawks tied the ballgame at 1-1 in the top of the sixth, but Blue Mountain third baseman Tianna Castillo cranked a two-run homer to put the home side ahead by a pair of runs. Trailing 3-1, the Breanna Owens led off the seventh with a double but the RedHawks could not scratch a run across.
Kaylee Davis suffered the defeat in the circle as she allowed just five hits and three runs across six innings of work.
In the nightcap, the RedHawks jumped on the Toppers (11-11, 1-5 SSAC) early as they scored three runs in the top of the first and added two more in the top half of the next frame. Ahead 5-0, the RedHawks allowed three runs in the bottom of the second, to hold a 5-3 lead after two full frames. The RedHawks added an insurance run in the fourth to push their lead up to three. Neither team scored a run over the final three innings of play as the RedHawk secured the win.
Victoria Haugness picked up her second win in her last two starts as she scattered five hits across seven innings. Haugness allowed just two earned runs as she secured the victory as the lone pitcher for the RedHawks.
Sabrina Gilliam continued her absolute torrid pace at the plate, finishing the day 6-for-6 with four doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs. Gilliam added a triple in the first contest of the day as well.
Hannah Hayes delivered just two hits on the day, but accounted for three RBIs.
