RedHawks Win Finale Versus No. 6 Mobile

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Softball team dropped the first three ballgames, but rallied for an extra-innings win in the series finale versus No. 6 nationally-ranked University of Mobile (Ala.) Saturday afternoon at Royce Hughes Field.

Two of the ballgames went to extra innings, including the 5-4 victory in the final ballgame of the series, as the SSAC Softball Games of the Week lived up to the billing as close, competitive contests.

The RedHawks (14-11, 7-5 SSAC) suffered a tough-luck, 5-4 extra-innings loss in Friday's first ballgame and fell, 3-0, in Friday's nightcap. The RedHawks rallied to take a one-run lead midway through Saturday's opener before the visitors took a 9-5 victory.

Reigning SSAC Softball Player of the Week Sabrina Gilliam led the offensive charge for the RedHawks on the weekend, notching six hits in 15 at-bats for a .400 batting average. Gilliam caught fire on Saturday afternoon, going 5-for-7 with three runs scored, a home run and four RBIs.

Breanna Owens collected just two hits on the weekend, but she delivered the biggest moment of the series for the RedHawks as she roped a pitch to short that was bobbled by Mobile shortstop Courtney Ellzey and allowed pinch runner Addie Baird to come around and score the game-winning run in Saturday's finale.

Owens also collected the win (2-0) in the circle in just her third appearance of the season. Owens allowed 11 hits, but allowed just four runs in eight innings of work to secure the victory.

Saturday's win snapped an 11-game losing skid versus the Rams (28-5, 12-2 SSAC), dating back to a pair of home wins on April 15, 2016.

The RedHawks return to action this Tuesday, March 26, when they host Cumberland (Tenn.), a squad currently receiving votes in the NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. First pitch in Tuesday's opener is set for 4 p.m. at Royce Hughes Field.
