TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Martin Methodist Softball team snapped a six-game losing streak and head coach Brandie Paul recorded her 700th career victory Friday afternoon versus Stillman (Ala.) at the SC Softball Complex.
The RedHawks (19-22, 10-12 SSAC) recorded a 9-2 victory in the first ballgame of the series and followed up with a 9-0 victory in the nightcap to give Coach Paul the milestone achievement.
The contests marked the first-ever meeting between the two ballclubs as the Tigers (17-25, 3-19 SSAC) joined the SSAC as league members this season.
In the first ballgame, the RedHawks cranked out 13 hits – five of which went for extra-bases – en route to the seven-run victory. Taylor Ferguson, Sabrina Gilliam and Hannah Hayes recorded doubles, while Hannah Ward notched her first-ever triple as a RedHawk.
Reagan Hannah, meanwhile, blasted her third home run of the season as part of a 3-for-3, four RBI ballgame.
Kaylee Davis scattered six hits across seven innings of work and allowed just two runs – only one of which was earned – as she picked up the win (10-11) in the circle. The victory was the first for Davis in her last four appearances. The sophomore right hander struck out eight batters in the win.
In the nightcap, the RedHawks struck for nine more runs behind nine hits in the shutout win.
The RedHawks notched a pair of runs in the first, added three in the third, a run in the fifth and three in the sixth for the run-rule-shortened victory.
Shelby Clifton finished the ballgame 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and three RBI. Hayes scored three runs while leadoff hitter Gilliam came around to score twice.
Victoria Haugness delivered a sensational performance in the circle as she allowed just five hits in a six-inning, complete game shutout. Haugness struck out three and faced just 23 total batters in the win (7-9).
The RedHawks and Tigers return to action Saturday afternoon to close out the series. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
