PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist Softball team dropped the opener, but rattled off three consecutive victories this weekend to take 3-of-4 ballgames versus Middle Georgia State on Senior Day 2019 at Royce Hughes Field.
The weekend was a special one for the RedHawks (24-23, 15-13 SSAC) as they celebrated the careers of three seniors – Taylor Ferguson, Taylor Mitchell and student-assistant Jordan Toney.
With deteriorating weather conditions on Friday, the two teams were only able to finish one ballgame, with the RedHawks suffering a 12-8 loss. The second game was officially postponed until Saturday morning, when the teams convened for a tripleheader.
Saturday's action began with the RedHawks picking up a 7-4 victory. The second contest broke in favor of the RedHawks with a 9-8 victory and they closed out the series with a 9-2 win.
The RedHawks return to action this weekend when they travel to Brewton-Parker (Ga.) to close out their regular season. The Friday-Saturday doubleheader is set to begin at Noon on both days.
Individually, Ferguson and Mitchell had big weekends in their final contests at the Royce Hughes Softball Field.
Ferguson saved her biggest performance for her last home ballgames and she smacked a two-run home run – the first of her career – in the bottom of the very first inning. The senior went 7-for-15 on the weekend with five RBI.
Mitchell, meanwhile, went 6-for-11 at the plate on the weekend, highlighted by a double and a triple on Saturday's opening ballgame. The senior also made two outstanding catches in the top of the sixth inning to help keep the RedHawks ahead.
Sabrina Gilliam posted a monster weekend at the plate at the leadoff position. Gilliam went 9-for-12 with six of the nine hits going for extra bases. In Friday's opener, Gilliam finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, finishing a lone single shy of hitting for the cycle.
In the circle, the RedHawks saw impressive performances from Hannah Hayes and Victoria Haugness.
Hayes made her first start in nearly a month on Saturday and allowed just two hits across seven innings for the complete-game victory (2-0). Hayes added her first career save in her second appearance on Saturday, tossing 2.1 innings of shutout work.
Haugness racked up her third win (9-9) in as many starts in a complete game victory on Saturday. Haugness allowed eight hits, but let just three earned runs come across in the win.
