Haugsness' No Hitter Highlights Sweep

Mt. VERNON, Ga.Victoria Haugsness threw the first no-hitter since 2011 to highlight a weekend sweep for the Martin Methodist Softball team at Brewton-Parker (Ga.).

The four wins are the final regular-season contests for the RedHawks (28-23, 19-13 SSAC), who secured the three seed in next week's Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Championship in Decatur, Alabama.

Playing their final road contests of the year, the RedHawks struck for a 6-4 win in Friday's opening ballgame. The squad followed up with an 11-3 victory in Friday's second contest and set the stage for Saturday's final two ballgames.

Haugsness stole the show on Saturday, striking out nine batters as she allowed just one walk in the complete game shutout to narrowly miss a perfect game in a 3-0 victory. The no-hitter marks the first by a RedHawk since former pitcher Kaitlin White twirled a no-hitter on Feb. 15, 2011.

Haugsness, who also notched a win on the mound on Friday, was not done in the circle as she threw four innings of relief work in the finale to lift the RedHawks to a 10-4 victory to cap the sweep.

On the year, Haugsness has racked up a 12-9 record and has not suffered a loss since back on April 9 – six appearances ago. In that timeframe, she has racked up six victories and struck out 35 batters – nearly half of her 77 strikeouts on the year.

Reigning NAIA National Player of the Week Sabrina Gilliam posted another big weekend for the RedHawks as she went 12-for-16 at the plate. Six of Gilliam's hits went for extra-bases as she notched five doubles and a home run. Gilliam drove in a total of 10 runs on the weekend – five of which came in one contest.

Taylor Ferguson notched six hits in 15 at-bats on the weekend and drove in six runs to flank Gilliam in the lineup.

Martin Methodist begins SSAC Softball Championship play on Thursday, May 2, when the RedHawks meet No. 6 seed Middle Georgia State. The RedHawks took three of four ballgames from the Knights (28-24, 15-17 SSAC) when the teams met in Pulaski earlier this month.
