Dr. Harriet Hamilton to Speak at Luncheon

PULASKI, Tenn. – The Martin Methodist College Athletic Department is inviting the Giles County community to attend May's RedHawk Athletic Luncheon on Wednesday, May 1, at the Hickory House Restaurant.

The monthly event, which began nearly three years ago, is held the first Wednesday of every month at Noon. The cost of the buffet will be $5 (excluding drink) and the RedHawks will pick up the balance of your buffet tab.

May's guest speaker is Dr. Harriet Hamilton, longtime collegiate athletics administrator and current Director of Tennis at NCAA Division I institution Tennessee State. As a pioneer at the grassroots level of sports, she is a Title IX advocate, an Athletic Director, Coach, Teacher, and Scholar.

After playing on Fisk University's first-ever women's basketball team, Dr. Hamilton transitioned into coaching and went on to win the school's first-ever conference championship.

In 1985, she became the first African-American woman in the nation to become an Athletic Director at an NCAA Division III institution at Fisk University.

Dr. Hamilton's background extends beyond collegiate athletics, however. She is also an author, publishing her first book in 2015 called "Daddy's Scrapbook: Henry Kimbro of the Negro Baseball League, A Daughter's Perspective."

Dr. Hamilton was inducted into the Fisk University's Sports Hall of Fame on November 11, 2017. Today she is an adjunct professor at Tennessee State University teaching graduate classes for the Sport Administration program in the Human Performance and Sport Science Department.

In addition to the special guest each month, Wednesday's meeting will also feature a brief recap and preview of RedHawk Athletic and Martin Methodist College events. A prize giveaway will also be conducted near the end of each meeting.

Come join the RedHawks in the RedHawk Room at the Hickory House Restaurant for a social, fast-paced "power luncheon" with limited seating. The luncheon will conclude by 12:50 p.m.
