RedHawks Win Pair of SSAC Contests

PULASKI, Tenn. — The Martin Methodist Women's Basketball team snapped a two-game conference losing skid with a pair of hard-fought wins this weekend in the Curry Christian Life Center.

The RedHawks (15-7, 7-3 SSAC) were able to grind out an 80-78 victory versus Mobile (Ala.) on Thursday, and followed up with a 58-49 win versus Stillman (Ala.) on Saturday.

Maria Zimdars stole the show on the week for the RedHawks, as she swished home the game-winning bucket in Thursday's win and followed up with a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double on Saturday.

Thursday's contest was a true back-and-forth affair, with the squads trading the lead on 18 occasions and the game was tied 10 times.

Mobile took a 35-34 lead into the halftime break, but the RedHawks outscored the Rams (11-8, 4-6) by a 26-21 margin in the third quarter. The Rams would not go away, however, as the RedHawks saw a four-point lead with 2:15 to play slip away. The Rams scored six-straight points to take the lead with 1:08 remaining.

Marcia Reed swished home a jumper with 45 seconds remaining to tie the contest at 78-78, and the Rams tossed the ball out of bounds to give the RedHawks a chance to win the contest in regulation.

As time ran down, Brooklyn Blanchard fired up a shot that missed the mark, but Zimdars was there to catch the rebound and lay it in with two seconds remaining. The Rams were out of timeouts, and Erin Freeman jumped in to intercept the ensuing inbounds pass and run out the clock for the win.

Saturday's contest was also tightly-contested, but the RedHawks were eventually able to secure the nine-point victory.

The RedHawks led by 11 after the first quarter, but the Tigers rallied to trim the lead to just four at halftime.

The lead ballooned back up to 11 in the third quarter for the RedHawks, but the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to close the period.

But in the fourth and final frame, the RedHawks pushed their lead back up to double-digits with 4:26 remaining.

The wins were much needed for the RedHawks, who had dropped two straight in league play. After a non-conference win versus Oakwood on Jan. 25, the RedHawks have now won three straight overall.

The RedHawks return to action next Thursday, Feb. 6, when they travel to McKenzie, Tennessee, for a showdown versus No. 9 Bethel (Tenn.).

Tipoff in Thursday's contest is set for 5:30 p.m.
