BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Faith Sherrow sank a program-record nine 3-pointers in a 33-point performance as the No. 25 Martin Methodist Women's Basketball team cruised to a 77-50 victory versus Blue Mountain (Miss.) Saturday afternoon.
Sherrow's nine triples mark the most ever in a single game, besting the seven Sherrow hit in a contest earlier this season versus Pikeville (Ky.). Former RedHawk standout Becca Smithson also notched seven 3-pointers in a game back on Jan. 28, 2013.
The RedHawks (16-8, 8-4 SSAC) controlled Saturday's contest throughout, trailing on just one occasion early in the first quarter. The RedHawks led by as many as 27 in the victory, which capped a season sweep versus the Toppers (7-12, 3-8 SSAC).
The RedHawks outscored the Toppers in every quarter, leading 22-15 at the end of the first and taking a 37-28 lead into the halftime break. The RedHawks outscored the Toppers by 10 in the third quarter to take a commanding 59-40 lead into the fourth, before ballooning their lead to as many as 27 near the end of the contest.
Sherrow was the lone RedHawk to connect on a 3-pointer, finishing the game 12-of-19 from the floor and 9-of-14 from downtown. The RedHawks finished the ballgame 33-of-60 (.550) from the field, shooting over 55 percent in both halves.
The RedHawks nearly had an even assist-to-turnover ratio, doling out 18 assists while committing just 19 turnovers.
Senior guard Brooklyn Blanchard had a strong all-around performance, scoring 12 points, adding five rebounds, four steals and four assists.
Lacey Reed and Marcia Reed rounded out the double-digit scoring nights with 14 and 10 points each, respectively.
The win was a much-needed one for the RedHawks (16-8, 8-4 SSAC), who suffered a lopsided defeat Thursday night versus rival Bethel (Tenn.).
The RedHawks return to action this week with a pair of road contests at NCAA Division II squad Alabama-Huntsville.
The RedHawks travel to Huntsville on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and again on Thursday, Feb. 13 in the non-conference matchups. Both tipoffs are set for 5:30 p.m.
